No. Some host families have a dedicated guest room. Others create a guest space in their home office or finished basement. Students can also share a bedroom with host siblings. They just need their own bed, futon, etc.
Nope! All of the kids have been studying English for years and are coming to practice, while becoming part of your family. In fact, since this is such a vital part of the program, host families must speak English in the home.
Yes! Host families have taken their students camping, on overnight trips, and even on weeklong trips to the Connecticut shore, Cape Cod, and even as far as Maine and DC!
The students travel with a group leader, and each comes with insurance. If a student gets sick, the host family simply calls the Program Coordinator (Debbie Tansino) who picks up the student and brings them (with the group leader) to a designated medical facility.
Each week, there is approximately 1-2 planned trips/activities. However, family plans always take priority. The teens will be here to practice their English and become part of an American family, so whatever you do -- they do! Whether that's going to a family barbeque, running errands, or even lounging around the house. While host families are expected to interact with their students, they are not required (and should not try) to provide a '3-ring circus.'
This depends on the specific situation. If parents work different schedules, this is usually not a concern. Or if families work part-time, work from home, or have their own teenagers around during the day, this is also acceptable. Because the students are here to become part of a family and practice their English, unfortunately, families are unable to host if the student will be spending extended periods of time by themselves.
EMY host families come in all shapes and sizes. Some are young couples, some have young children, teenagers, are emptinesters, or have no children. All that matters is that the family is willing to open their hearts and home to one of these incredible young people!
Yes. EMY host families receive a $350 stipend, which can offset expenses (i.e. food and gas) and/or be put toward the trips that the family would like to join.
Yes. Host families provide room, board, and transportation. However, the students do bring their own money for shopping, souvenirs, etc.
Great! Please email the EMY Coordinator, Debbie Tansino, here.
